Jude

“It’s Wolfie’s first séance,” Jude sang, as he rubbed the baby down with a blue towel. Bath time was over and it was time to get his little rascal ready for bed. “What kind of pajamas are appropriate for a first séance, Cope? Jude asked, holding up two different sets. “Sailboats or trains?”

“Christ, don’t we have any crystal ball pajamas?” Cope started to laugh. He blew a raspberry against the side of Wolf’s neck, making him giggle.

“Fresh out.” Jude managed to maneuver the baby’s legs into the train pajamas. “Choo-choo!”

“Oooo!” Wolf parroted.

“If I’d known conducting a vampire séance in our house brought out the best in you, we would have had one a long time ago.”

“No one likes a smartass.” Jude snapped up the front of the pjs and set Wolf free. The baby sat up in the center of their king-sized bed before crawling to the pillows and settling himself against Jude’s. The baby was trained well. Wolf knew it was story time.

“You know, this is my favorite part of the day.” Cope picked up one of the dozen children’s books sitting on his nightstand and snuggled next to his son.

Jude listened with awe as Cope began reading the book to their son. He’d never imagined a life like this when the two of them had met several years ago, when Cope had come to town half dead, looking for his help. Now, here they were in a house of their own, with kittens and a son all depending on both of them. He may never have pictured a life like this, but Jude wouldn’t give it up for anything.

Wolf was asleep by the time Cope finished the first book. It wasn’t like the baby at all, usually he fought to stay awake through three or four stories. Jude scooped him up and walked across the hall to his room, setting him in his crib. Cope was right behind him. They both stood and watched the baby sleep peacefully for a few minutes before heading back downstairs.

“I’m hungry. Do you think our friends will bring snacks to the séance?” Jude could really go for a plate of nachos. Tennyson made the best nachos around. He wasn’t cheap with the cheese, either, unlike someone Jude knew.

“It’s a séance, not a candlelight supper.” Cope rolled his eyes. He walked into the kitchen and started filling the coffee pot with water.

Be that as it may, Jude was still hungry. They’d had sandwiches for dinner, and he’d been anxious to spend time playing with the baby, so he hadn’t eaten his fill. Jude had a sinking feeling he wasn’t going to have much of an appetite left after trying to conjure the spirit of Kingston Gamble.

The doorbell rang. “It’s Cisco and Luca,” Cope said. “I hope Cisco was able to bring something from the grave with him tonight. Oh, would you get the door?” Cope hurried back to the coffee pot, hitting the button to turn it on.

Cope was right, it was Cisco and Luca.
